Professionalization Digital Media

The federal and state governments have made a significant contribution to teacher education in Germany with the jointly organized "Quality Offensive Teacher Education". With a grant of around 500 million euros, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports selected universities in their efforts to improve the implementation of teacher training in the long term. In the first funding phase 49 projects were implemented, involving 59 universities. In 2019, the second funding phase started with 48 projects and 58 universities in all provinces and runs until the end of 2023.

The RWTH Aachen University belongs to the three universities from North Rhine-Westphalia with their concept "Being Different Together - Teacher Education at the RWTH Aachen University", whose projects are further funded. As part of an intensive analysis of strengths and weaknesses, a cooperative, broad discussion process was used to identify the key challenges in teacher education. With the concept "Being Different Together", the three dimensions "heterogeneity in education and professionalization processes", "strengthening practical relevance and professionalization" as well as "support structures for the whole of teacher education" are linked together.

Dealing with digital media is an element in the interdisciplinary field of professionalisation of the master's program. In the professionalization area "Digital Media", various offers are designed and offered for teaching students and teachers. The responsibility for this area will be taken over by Ms. Deborah Hennig from the Institute for Educational Science.

Funding period of the project "Being Different Together - Teacher Education at RWTH Aachen University" (LeBiAC): 01.01.2019 to 30.06.2023.

Professionalization Digital Media

In view of the current technical and social developments, it can be assumed that the use of digital media in the school context will become more and more important. Accordingly, it has become necessary to train prospective teachers in this field. For this reason, in addition to the media-related courses in educational science courses within the framework of the interdisciplinary professionalisation area, corresponding courses are offered on the use of media in the school. As part of these workshops, which are addressed to students of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, the participants will be given practical skills and independent tests to demonstrate the skills required for school work. The promotion of media educational and media didactic competencies are in line with this. Here you will find the current program for workshops in winter semester 2020/21.

In the second funding phase, in addition to the existing workshops, there is also a growing focus on the inclusion of subject-related didactics and the development of concepts for digital education in teacher education, including media education, media didactics and computer science.

Training in Jülich - Use of tablet PCs for practice-oriented prevention of cyberbullying

On September 7, 2015, we were guests at the Gymnasium Zitadelle Jülich to present our workshop concept on "cyberbullying". Individual teachers had become aware of our project and were very interested in getting to know this concept and at the same time presenting it to interested students. Behind this is the idea that the older students in the sense of a peer-to-peer approach in future workshops on "cyberbullying" with younger students.
Our task this time was therefore not to accompany a project day, which is carried out by teacher training students. Rather, we now had to act as workshop leader within the framework of the "Quality Offensive Teacher Education - Digital Media Professionalization". However, we did not just do the different exercises, but also always discussed why which exercise is used and which learning goal is involved. In this way, the teachers and student representatives of the Gymnasium Zitadelle Jülich not only got to know different exercises and methods, but also gained an insight into the methodical planning.
The work with the tablets was particularly exciting for the students. They also confirmed our assessment that the use of this digital learning tool leads to special attention on the part of the students. And so we have the justified hope that our concept will also be used in Jülich in the future.

Social Media in Social Studies / Politics - Problems and Opportunities

The Federal Agency for Civic Education is one of the most important contacts in the field of education when it comes to political education at school. And so it was not surprising that the conference Wars and Conflicts - School between medial opinion formation and the claim of political education met with a great response despite the extremely summery temperatures. Teachers and educational speakers from all over Germany traveled to discuss current issues.
The focus was on the question of how adolescents in the digital age obtain information about crises and conflicts and how they rate the various sources. In view of the large number of sources of information and the accusation of the manipulation of opinions in relation to various media, a discussion in the classroom seems indispensable. It is important to take a closer look at the role of the media. However, this raises the question of how this can be implemented. The KMK / bpb Cooperation Conference sought answers to these questions on 12 and 13 September 2016.
As part of the workshop "Social Media in Social and Political Education", I was able to discuss with the participants how social media applications such as Twitter, Facebook and also YouTube can be used in lessons to understand and classify current discourses and discourse cultures. An important point here was the question of whether and to what extent adolescents can / must be motivated and instructed to actively participate in discussions on current political conflicts / issues. In the sense of the "Quality Offensive Teacher Education - Professionalization Digital Media" an exciting exchange with experienced teachers took place at the conference in Berlin, which can also be used for further offers at the RWTH Aachen for our teacher training students.
